Henri Paul was terrible driver, witness tells Diana inquest (AFP)

LONDON (AFP) - Henri Paul -- who was at the wheel when Princess Diana died in a Paris car crash -- was a reckless driver, a holistic healer who worked for her boyfriends family told Dianas inquest on Tuesday.

Myriah Daniels said Henri Paul had driven "like a maniac" into Paris after she had flown to the French capital with the princess and her boyfriend Dodi Fayed after a much-photographed Mediterranean cruise.

"I should be dead. I was positive I would be killed in that drive," she told the High Court in London.

"Henri Paul almost killed us, honest to God, he was driving way too fast and recklessly and I was saying slow down, slow down, but nobodys listening and nobodys doing anything.

"Im like Were all going to get killed, Dodis people all get killed," Daniels said.

"He was driving like a maniac through the traffic. He drove from the left-hand lane all the way across the freeway to the offside ramp and the Range Rover almost tipped over and I was sure we were all going to die."

A French police probe and a British official inquiry concluded that the crash on August 31, 1997 was an accident, pointing out that Paul was over the drink-drive limit at the time of the crash.

Diana, Dodi Fayed and Paul were all killed in the crash as they tried to flee photographers pursuing them from the Ritz hotel in central Paris.

Dodi Fayeds father, Harrods owner Mohamed al-Fayed, maintains the couple were killed in a British establishment plot as they did not want to see the mother to the heir to the throne marry a Muslim.

Daniels, a US citizen, also told the inquest that a "smitten" Dodi was convinced there was no danger to the couple and they often left the Fayeds yacht during the Mediterranean cruise without their bodyguards.

Daniels, who was on board the yacht, said she had warned Dodi to take care of the princess.

"I would say to Dodi You cannot take off without your bodyguards. They are here to look after Diana.

"He looked at me as if to say that he did not understand that there could be any danger.

"I saw two people who were smitten with each other," she said.

The task of looking after Diana was "overburdening" for the two bodyguards employed by the Fayeds and they were "freaking out".

A lawyer for Pauls parents cast doubt on Daniels credibility, asking her why she had once given herself the name "The Reverend Daniels" when she had no formal training.

Daniels replied: "I think basically life gave me the title."
